Description

Frame-of-Care-ProjectThe project integrates a strategy of multi-dimensional care for HIV/AIDS with a program of prevention and treatment for HPV/Cervical Carcinoma like development of a more complete action for promotion of reproductive health.

The work presently promoted by New Humanity covers a global approach to the promotion of women’s health in the Region surrounding Fontem, Cameroon. The project pays particular attention to the sociocultural context in the provision of the medical care and takes advantage of the synergy for health intervention against AIDS and Cervical Carcinoma.

In the Cameroon, AIDS has an incidence of 6,9% (2003) and the cervical carcinoma has a standardized incidence for ages (ASR) of 30.1 – 40.0 per 100,000 (2002), but only 5% of women undergo screening.

This reflects minimal oversight for AIDS, for sexually transmitted diseases, and for Aids-correlated tumoral pathologies.

Frame-of-Care-ProjectLessons learned

From 1996 to 2005, over 6200 tests for HIV among the female population were carried out by the hospital in Fontem with a median percentage of sero-positive women at 54.3%.

In November 2005,  the hospital began an oncologic service for the prevention of cervical pathology.

The conventional screening for cervical carcinoma carried out for HIV-positive patients becomes effective when introduced in the follow-up and offered to the local population caught spontaneously.
